Why December 25?

Justin Taylor, of Between Two Worlds, gives us an interesting post summarizing an article by G.E. Veith for World Magazine on the origins of Dec. 25 being the day we celebrate Christ’s birth. Apparently there is no connection at all to a pagan festival on that day. That oft alleged criticism is pure urban legend.

The Purpose of the Church: Evangelism?

Brandon Crawford recently brought up a good point in a post on “The Purpose of the Church” over at his blog, Sound Words. He questions the overemphasis of evangelism that is so common in churches today, and especially fundamentalist churches. “Overemphasis on evangelism?” you might say. Well read his post to see what he means! (Check out my comment too 🙂 )

Are You Living the Cross Centered Life?

I recently read C.J. Mahaney’s classic book The Cross Centered Life. Let me recommend it wholeheartedly!

It has the ability to transform your life, and greatly reorient your thinking. It’s subtitle is “Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing“. Am I doing that, are you? The gospel is not only important for the lost, but it is the fuel which is to supply our energy for the Christian life.

Here is a great review of the small book (only 89 pages) by Tim Challies. I encourage you to get this and make it part of your life.

Gal. 6:14 “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

Freebies!

If you are like me, you notice freebies! Well, I wanted to pass along a freebie I noticed, that really could benefit you all.

Monergism.com is offering 4 different MP3 CDs for free. (You can play them on almost any computer, or a compatible CD player). 3 of them are chuck full of John Piper messages, and the other one looks good, too. Unfortunately you can only get one for free. There is a shipping fee, but if you browse Monergism’s store and see anything else you might want to order, you can have it shipped for the same $5 shipping fee (no extra, just one flat fee).

Go here to check it out!

Dean John W. Burgon Not “Textus Receptus†Only

Doug Kutilek writes on the KJV-only issue over at Sharper Iron. Check out his great post, Dean John W. Burgon Not “Textus Receptus” Only

It was Kutilek’s articles at KJVonly.org which helped me out of KJV-onlyism. A couple of his articles grace my “KJV Only Debate Resource List” over on the right hand margin of this blog.

I commented on this article, thanking Dr. Kutilek for his great articles.

Update: My “KJV Only Debate Resource List” has now become the KJV Only Debate Resource Center–a site I am developing. For details about the site see this post.
