New Year, New Bible Reading Plan

My church, Bethlehem Baptist has its own Bible reading plan. You can see (and print) the plan here: part 1 and part 2.

The plan lets you read in 4 different places each day. It goes through the New Testament at a slower, more digestable pace. And it also goes through the entire Old Testament. What is especially nice about this plan is that it only has 25 readings for each month. This helps those who might fall behind a couple times a month to not get discouraged and just give up. It also enables those who are faithfully reading the plan each day to have extra time to focus on personal Bible study at the end of each month.

Whether you use this plan, another plan, or just your own plan, PLAN on reading the Bible this year. You are not required, as a Christian, to read the whole Bible through in a year, but the Bible is food for the true believer’s soul. It enables him to have a heavenly mindset and spiritual focus on the glory of Christ. Make sure to make time for God’s Word in 2006!

Great Evangelistic Tool from Desiring God Ministries!

For Your Joy, an evangelistic booklet from Desiring God Ministries, click to order

You must check out this great evangelistic tool offered by Desiring God Ministries. It is a 48 page softcover booklet specifically designed for evangelism, entitled For Your Joy. I have read through it, and it is just great. It deals with the gospel thoroughly as well as addressing some common hindrances to faith, such as the problem of pain and suffering. This booklet is very clear and direct, yet written in a warm, loving and personal way. You can read the whole booklet by previewing it.

Desiring God is offering these booklets at a greatly reduced cost when purchased in bulk. These would be great for giving to people you meet on a plane, or for coworkers. Churches could purchase them and give them to visitors. The opportunities for utilizing this resource seem endless.

Along these lines, Desiring God has produced a first class MP3 CD of 7 messages by John Piper that would also be useful for evangelism. Bulk discounts are also available for this resource, entitled Light and Heat.

(Jesus) said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Mark 5:19 ESV

Seeing & Savoring Jesus Christ by John Piper

I have been reading an excellent book, Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ by John Piper. This book really directs your heart and mind toward Jesus Christ. It highlights the revelation of the character, worth, and glory–indeed beauty–of Jesus Christ given to us in the gospels. The chapters are short and devotional. But they are very thought-provoking and would provide excellent fodder for extended meditation. I encourage you to add this book to your bookshelf too!

Update: This book is also available to read online here!

Mark Dever on Pastoral Theology

Justin Taylor, of Between Two Worlds, points out some great resources by Mark Dever, pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church, and founder of 9 Marks Ministries. He is perhaps best known for his booklet, The Nine Marks of a Healthy Church. One of the distinguishing features of his Nine Marks Ministries is their interviews. Mark Dever conducts interviews with many of the conservative evangelicals of the day. His church has more in common with English Baptist churches of 200 years ago than with many churches today. It is a fascinating ministry with a deep respect for God’s Word.

The resources Justin Taylor pointed out in his post are audio recordings (MP3 files) of 5 minute answers to a host of different questions concerning pastoral ministry and pastoral theology. I encourage you to check out these resources, and at leat to bookmark Nine Marks Ministries.

Three Christmases?

I know I said I wouldn’t be blogging much. But I just had to pass this along!

Dr. Kevin Bauder, of Central Baptist Theological Seminary of Minneapolis, published an excellent article on “The Three Christmases”. I think you will find the article very helpful this time of year.
