Meditation on Isaiah 40:1-11 by Alec Motyer

Posted by Bob Hayton on
October 25th, 2013

I have been making my way through Alec Motyer’s book Isaiah by the Day: A New Devotional Translation. This hardcover, wide margin book presents Motyer’s fresh translation of Isaiah and includes textual notes as well as introductory material and a devotional thought for each of the 71 readings in the…

The Journal of Biblical Textual Criticism Refutes a King James Onlyist

Posted by Bob Hayton on
April 24th, 2012

I guess this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. The Journal of Biblical Textual Criticism refutes Thomas Holland, a King James Onlyist. But the fact that a scholarly journal took the time to interact with Holland’s attempts at scholarship is actually quite surprising. But I’m very glad they did….

Initial Thoughts on the New, Updated NIV

Posted by Bob Hayton on
November 4th, 2010
NIV

For years, the NIV has been the most loved, and most hated of the modern Bible versions produced in the 20th Century. Many of us who used to be KJV-only advocates used to reserve our sharpest criticisms for the NIV. Perhaps that background is one of the reasons many of…

Goodbye TNIV, Hello 2011 Updated NIV

Posted by Bob Hayton on
September 2nd, 2009
Bible1

Yesterday, Zondervan Publishing House and Biblica (formerly the International Bible Society) announced plans to revise the NIV in 2011 and discontinue the controversial TNIV.   Many conservative evangelicals, and groups like the Council for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) openly opposed the gender neutral translation choices of the TNIV.   So to…

Testing the Textus Receptus: Luke 2:22

Posted by fundyreformed on
February 14th, 2009

In Testing the Textus Receptus posts, I test the claims of Textus Receptus (TR) Onlyism.   This is a moderate form of King James Onlyism focusing on the Greek (& Hebrew) basis for the King James Version. As I mentioned earlier, Luke 2:22 is one of three passages that James White…

Testing the Textus Receptus: Introduction

Posted by fundyreformed on
February 12th, 2009

Recently, James White debated Bart Ehrman, a former evangelical textual scholar turned agnostic on the reliability of the New Testament.   I am not necessarily a White fan, and I am not going to speculate as to who really won the debate.   What interests me has to do with White’s fielding…
